Honor Award, American Institute of Architects Student Success Center, Chicago State University, 1996

The two-story ‘L’ shaped student union features a rotunda with a large conical skylight. The rotunda provides Chicago State University with an interior gathering space for students and faculty.

The flexible space will be used for casual social encounters, art exhibitions, lectures and live performances. Three food service facilities will provide alternative dining opportunities.

The Student Success Center offers career counseling, tutoring, personal guidance and a computer center for personal achievement. Offices for student functions and recreation provide space for extra-curricular activities. This is the largest facility in the United States that addresses an African-American architectural aesthetic.
