Green Architecture at the New Kennedy King College

The New Kennedy King College incorporates the following green architecture considerations in its design:
  • Low E-Glass
  • Sun Baffles on South and West windows
  • Exterior walls with R-Values ranging from 22.38 to 24.73
  • Roof with an R-Value of 37.5
  • 70,000 square feet roof area that is used as Green Roof Technology. The remaining roof area will have a roofing membrane with a high coefficient of reflectivity per the New Chicago Energy Code.
  • The exterior walls will not exceed the maximum area of glazing per the New Energy Code.
  • The roofs will not exceed the maximum area of sky lighting per the New Energy Code.
  • The Campus makes use of rapid transit as well as CTA surface lines.
  • Bicycle racks are to be used in conjunction with bike lanes to be built by CDOT.
  • Recyclable waste pick up
  • Pulping system for kitchen waste
  • Daylight view 75% of Spaces
  • Light pollution reduction through the use of appropriate site lighting fixtures.
  • Sustainable Site – Minimum Residential Relocation
  • Indoor Environmental Quality Adherence
  • Saved existing 30 year old trees on the southern edge of the recreation field
  • 481 Shade Trees
  • 25 Ornamental Trees
  • 110,000 square feet of shrubs, perennial flowers and ground cover beds
  • 9 acres of lawn area
