PULLMAN FIREHOUSE CULTURAL CENTERThe site is located on the Southside of 108th Street at Champlain Avenue immediately adjacent to a light industrial manufacturing complex. Across the street to the north are located single family homes typical Pullman rowhouses. Cottage Grove is the western boundary of site, a heavily traveled thorough fare. Parallel to Cottage runs the Metra commuter train. A new parking lot shall be located to the west of the existing building. Chicago Transit Authority operates a bus route along Cottage Grove Avenue. The Metra has a stop along Cottage Grove at 111th and 103rd Streets. The new entry structure shall be located between the existing building and new parking lot. Entry to be handicapped accessible with accessible parking spaces nearby. Service and loading shall occur through new entrance or at the rear of building.
Under the Pullman Firehouse Revitalization Demonstration Project, the original Pullman Fire Station of 1882,
will be renovated for the use as a cultural center for the Pullman community. This public facility will be used
to nurture the artistic talents of the residents within this under served community.
![]() This facility will offer local residents the opportunity to enjoy recreational and educational programs designed to increase the awareness of cultural diversity and historic preservation within the Pullman community. The Pullman Firehouse Center facility will offer myriad activities that can be enjoyed by youths, seniors and adults. The facility will serve as a recreational and educational facility linking with various other resources that serve as extensions and additional opportunities for residents. The facility will also house the A. Philip Randolph/Pullman Museum. The museum will contain exhibit space, storage and administrative offices. The total square footage of the project is approximately 8,146 sf., four thousand six hundred (4,600) sf. in the existing building envelope and three thousand five hundred and fortysix (3,546) sf. in new additional space. |
