HORNER REVITALIZATION

The first phase of this project included the demolition of four existing Chicago Housing Authority high rises at the Henry Horner Development. Johnson & Lee recommended the re-institution of the street grid and the use of alleys to prevent unmanageable common parking lots. The firm's role included the design of 73 mixed-income units in Block 'A' of the new construction.

One of the unit types was designed to mediate between the rapid transit line and the common residential areas. By creating an acoustical separation the impact of the rapid transit line was minimized.

A variety of architectural styles were employed throughout the project. This gave the site a heterogeneous look, typical of Chicago's residential neighborhoods. Construction costs were 7.1 million dollars. The Habitat Company developed the project.
