SMITH RESIDENCE

Winner: The Chicago and Midwest Villa
Juror’s Choice Award,
The Chicago Athenaeum 1996.

The design challenge was to create a five bedroom house with guest quarters utilizing the existing two bedroom house. The client requested a new building aesthetic to have a unifying modern architectural language.

Johnson & Lee’s solution is the addition of a new structure with connecting decks enclosing the existing house. The axis of the new addition is rotated to take advantage of the Miami skyline.

The new structure is a modernist statement in the manner of Le Corbusier with a concrete wall and punched openings. A screen wall defines the entrance, which is set apart from the building volume. The rear addition, facing Biscayne Bay is simple concrete framed with a glazed infill curtain wall enclosure to maximize the vista of the Bay and downtown skyline.
