STATEWAY GARDENS
Winner: Congress for the New Urbanism Stateway Gardens is currently one of the Chicago Housing Authority’s more notorious public housing sites. This project will include the demolition of the existing structures and the development of a new mixed-income housing development. Johnson & Lee is proposing a more contextual approach than the current high-rises. By restoring the original street grid, this site will be reintroduced into the city’s urban fabric. The entire project will include town homes, larger six-flat units to anchor the corners and select mid-rise buildings. At the base of the mid-rise buildings there will be retail opportunities. The development will accommodate approximately 1200 dwelling units. Architecturally, the market rate, affordable and public housing will be indistinguishable from one another. This will eliminate the stigma that public housing has had in the past because it was too easily identifiable. |
